Chapter 135: Secret Investigation
Lin Zhiwei stared blankly at the ceiling, her mind sifting through the details of the day, specifically the moments before the curtain fell.
Even if someone had tampered with it beforehand, they could not have calculated her exact position on stage or how long she would linger there—unless someone specific had led her to that spot and detained her.
Xin Xin? The girl’s bright smile flashed through Lin Zhiwei’s mind.
Never mind. It was likely Ye Lingyun’s coercion anyway. Fortunately, she had already had Nan Yu install surveillance cameras in every corner of the broadcasting hall. Everything that happened today, including the tampering, must have been recorded. As soon as Nan Yu played back the footage, everything would be clear.
She had thought Ye Lingyun would lay low for a while, but it seemed the woman had suffered such a devastating blow that she had become even more unhinged.
When Ling Ziheng and Pei Xi entered, they found Lin Zhiwei staring at the ceiling with empty eyes. Ling Ziheng rushed over in a stride. "Weiwei, what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"
Lin Zhiwei snapped back to reality, looking puzzled. "I'm fine. I was just replaying what happened earlier. Darling, you're too tense."
Ling Ziheng adjusted the bed, set up the small table, and laid out a spread of light porridge and snacks.
Just as Lin Zhiwei reached for the spoon, he took it from her, blew on the food, and brought it to her lips. Only when he saw her obediently eat did he visibly relax.
"Where is Nan Yu? He said he was bringing me food, so why did he run off?" Lin Zhiwei asked, enjoying the VIP treatment.
"The doctor ordered you to eat only light, nutritious food. He brought snacks, so I sent him home," Ling Ziheng replied, his excuse seamless.
Lin Zhiwei nodded, not suspecting a thing. Her eyes filled with hopeful pleading. "Can I be discharged tomorrow?"
Ling Ziheng, knowing the young woman couldn't sit still, coaxed her, "Stay for two more days."
Lin Zhiwei pouted in dissatisfaction.
"If you leave too soon, it won't seem realistic," Ling Ziheng explained, noticing her disappointment.
"That makes sense." Lin Zhiwei immediately agreed. She had been careless; she hadn't considered that. Having lost so much blood and fainted, it was a major event in everyone’s eyes. Discharging too quickly would let Ye Lingyun off too easily.
She looked at the man, who showed slight signs of fatigue, and reached out to stroke his face, her heart aching. "I'm sorry for making you worry. I'm fine now. You should go attend to your work. I’m just pretending to be weak, not actually fragile."
Ling Ziheng covered her hand with his and pressed it to his lips. "I'm going back to the company, but I'll be back to keep you company later. I've already contacted Yin Mi'er; she'll be here soon."
Lin Zhiwei’s eyes dimmed. Oh no, here comes the overprotective nagging. "Fine. Mi'er is definitely going to lecture me again. Don't come back tonight; get some good rest. You’ve been working overtime too much lately. This is the private floor of the VVVV hospital; there are plenty of people to take care of me. Don't worry."
"I can't help it. I'm worried," Ling Ziheng said earnestly.
"Mi'er will be here. Besides, there's only one bed here; where would you sleep?" she asked.
"Beside you."
Lin Zhiwei was speechless. Darling, are you sure you aren't using my inconvenient hand as an excuse to take advantage of the situation?
Pei Xi poked his head in at the door. Ling Ziheng understood, patted her head, and smiled faintly. "I'm just teasing you. Let Yin Mi'er stay with you. I'll come by tomorrow. Send me a message, okay?"
"Okay." Lin Zhiwei breathed a sigh of relief. She would rather wait until her hand recovered before taking advantage of her darling; being in the hospital really cramped her style. "I'll be checking on you! If you stay in meetings too late, I'll go head-butting a piece of tofu to show you!"
"Understood," Ling Ziheng replied with a smile, following Pei Xi out.
"Young Master, Dr. Hawkins has arrived," Pei Xi whispered once they were a safe distance from the room.
"Good. Let's go," Ling Ziheng said, his expression solemn.
They quickly went downstairs to the private reception room. Dr. Hawkins was busy typing on his laptop. Seeing Ling Ziheng enter, he stood up immediately. "Mr. Ling, long time no see. I have a general understanding of the situation you described. As long as I can find an opportunity to run a few more tests tomorrow, I can provide a more detailed consultation for Miss Lin."
"Sorry for the trouble, Dr. Hawkins," Ling Ziheng thanked him sincerely.
"Don't worry, Miss Lin will never notice. Your previous suspicion was that there might be residual toxins from hallucinogens in Miss Lin's body, correct?"
"Yes, but that is merely my own speculation."
"Understood. Hallucinogens have been upgraded several times in Country A; dosages and physiological reactions vary. I understand your concerns, and I will do my best!"
"Thank you!"
"I happened to be on a business trip in Y City, just an hour away. You're welcome, Mr. Ling."
Ling Ziheng stood up and shook the doctor's hand, his face etched with concern he could not hide. Memories and the like were secondary; as long as his girl was physically healthy, he could breathe a sigh of relief.
As for other matters, perhaps only another expert could provide answers, and that master was currently traveling abroad—hardly reachable for the time being.
After Pei Xi saw the doctor out, Ling Ziheng immediately ordered, "Pei Xi, have our contacts in the Nameless Domain keep watch. Notify me the moment Master returns!"
"Yes." Pei Xi responded immediately. This was a grave matter. Although he had studied poisons and antidotes for years, matters involving hallucinogens, or more ancient charms and concoctions, were treasures of the Ancient Clans; those not personally apprenticed to the masters could not even touch the surface.
He only hoped Miss Weiwei’s memory had merely been sealed and that there would be no lasting side effects.
Pei Xi’s phone vibrated. He answered immediately. "Alright, please wait a moment, I'll come pick you up."
He then turned to Ling Ziheng. "It's Miss Yin. I'll go get her."
"Let's go down together." Ling Ziheng rubbed his temples, looking utterly exhausted.
"Yes."
As they walked downstairs, nurses and doctors they passed cast secret glances at their boss and the famous actor. It was a rare treat, though in all their time working there, the chances of seeing this man were nearly zero.
"The boss is just ridiculously handsome! I've only ever seen him in movies, but he’s even more heavenly in person," one nurse whispered, her eyes full of admiration.
"He really is breathtaking!"
"Hey, do you know who is staying on the boss's private floor?"
"I only remember the boss carrying someone in who was bleeding today."
"A man?"
"Not necessarily. They were covered with clothes; it was hard to tell."
"Did you see the boss's nervous expression? It must be someone incredibly important!"
"I really want to go up and help; then I could see who it is."
"Keep dreaming. Only his personal nurses and doctors are allowed on that floor. You lot will never get near it in this lifetime!"
"Ugh, so heartless!"
