Chapter 107: Are You Some Kind of Dog Spirit?

Although Jiang You and his father were biological brothers, Jiang You’s father was strikingly handsome, whereas Jiang You’s appearance was rather ordinary. People naturally tend to compare, and since childhood, Jiang You had always felt less attractive than his father. However, as he later made a name for himself, attracted many women, and amassed considerable wealth, those feelings of inadequacy gradually faded. Now that he was wealthy again, the gold on that stone had brought him a tidy profit. Thus, Jiang You bought that piece of clothing almost on a whim.

Jiang You’s father and Mrs. Zhao changed back into their old clothes. On their way back to Xitang Village, Mrs. Zhao turned to Jiang You’s father and said, “The fabric shop in Hengfeng is quite suitable for making bags. Let me think—if we turn that material into bags, we could even hire people from the flower house. Once they use these bags, many women will surely ask about them.”
Mrs. Zhao’s insight was sharp and hit the mark. Jiang You’s father shook his head. “Didn’t you hear when you went to Haitang Pavilion today? The flower house hasn’t even settled accounts with Haitang Pavilion. According to the owner, it seems the flower house has offended someone powerful and will probably disappear soon.”
Mrs. Zhao had been busy selecting jewelry for Bai Yan inside Haitang Pavilion and hadn’t paid much attention. “The flower house has been around for so many years. Whoever can take it down must be formidable,” she muttered. Jiang You’s father nodded in agreement.
“Regarding the carpenter’s shop, hurry up and make two samples to send over so they can start working quickly.” Mrs. Zhao was confident about these two shops.
“All right,” Jiang You’s father replied with an honest smile.

...
At Jiang Chengyan’s home, Bai Yan crept along the wall slowly toward the small storage shed, moving like a snail as she glanced around cautiously. Jiang Chengyan appeared, carrying a small abacus, and saw her timid demeanor.
“Why are you sticking to the wall? Polishing it?” Jiang Chengyan raised an eyebrow.
“There’s... there’s a dog,” Bai Yan whispered, as if afraid of disturbing something.
“Are you insulting me again?” Jiang Chengyan pursed his lips.
“There really is a dog,” Bai Yan insisted, pointing toward the courtyard.
Jiang Chengyan strode outside and spotted a fluffy little yellow dog curled up beside the stone pillar, wagging its tiny tail vigorously.
“Husband, are you lying to me?” the girl asked with a plaintive look.
“Where would I lie?” Jiang Chengyan turned back.
“Are you not human?” Bai Yan took small steps toward him. “Are you a dog spirit? Otherwise, why would dogs be so drawn to you?”
Jiang Chengyan was too lazy to respond.
“The mushrooms should be harvested, and the wild vegetables too. Mother said Qingming Festival is coming soon,” Bai Yan said, slipping quickly into the small shed and closing the door to keep the dog out.

Jiang Chengyan glanced at the shed door, then bent down, grasped the scruff of the little dog’s neck, and prepared to take it over to Zhao Chujou.
“Hey, where did this little dog come from? It looks even smaller than our Xiao Hui,” Mrs. Zhao was about to bring jewelry to Bai Yan when she saw Jiang Chengyan holding the pup by the scruff.
She snatched the puppy away, which wagged its tail furiously, trembling slightly.
“Take it home and raise it,” Mrs. Zhao said perfunctorily, not waiting for Jiang You’s father to decide—she had already made up her mind.
“Little one, look what I brought you,” Mrs. Zhao knew Bai Yan was afraid of dogs, so she handed the dog to Jiang You’s father and went to find Bai Yan.
Jiang You’s father cradled the puppy tenderly, his face full of affection.
“When will you have children?” Jiang Chengyan suddenly asked when only the two men remained at the doorway.
Jiang You’s father thought seriously for a moment. “Your mother went for medicine again today, but there’s no news yet.”
“Hurry up,” Jiang Chengyan said impassively.
Right now, only a pregnancy could keep Mrs. Zhao tethered; otherwise, she would keep coming and going here, searching for the rabbit.
