Jiang Chengyan held Bai Yan the entire time until she finished her medicine and stopped crying out in pain, only then tucking her securely beneath the covers.

"Remember this time of the month. Don't let her touch anything cold. If she doesn't take good care of herself while she's young, she'll easily fall ill when she's old," Mrs. Zhao instructed Jiang Chengyan in parting before carrying the empty medicine bowl outside.

As the bowl passed before his eyes, Jiang Chengyan caught another faint whiff of herbal fragrance.

………………

When Bai Yan woke up, it was already pitch dark. She felt her little belly and found a warm water bottle placed beside her. The agonizing pain was gone, and she just felt a bit... a bit hungry.

"Awoken?" Seeing her start to toss and turn, Jiang Chengyan pulled her into his embrace.

"I still feel a bit uncomfortable." Bai Yan kicked her legs beneath the blankets and let out a soft whimper. Why did having her period have to involve such misery?

"Just bear with it for a couple of days, hmm?" Jiang Chengyan held her, his tone calm and even, while his hand gently patted her back.

The little rabbit held up two fingers and waved them in front of Jiang Chengyan. "Is it really just two days?"

"When I say two days, it means more than two days. It's not an exact two days." Jiang Chengyan pinched the rabbit's nose and the corners of his lips curved upward.

"That means when you promised me two silver banknotes, you actually meant you should give me three instead, right?" Bai Yan's eyes lit up. With a swift movement, she flipped over and draped herself across Jiang Chengyan's chest.

"Is this what you've learned from all your reading?" Jiang Chengyan stood up, conveniently scooping her up to sit on his lap.

" Lass, are you awake? Dad made some glutinous rice chicken, come down and eat!" Father Jiang's booming voice echoed from outside, and upon hearing it, Bai Yan slipped away like a slippery little fish, eager to scurry down.

Jiang Chengyan caught her, wrapped her outer robe properly around her, and only then carried Bai Yan downstairs.

During the meal, she ate like a little beggar, a sight that almost startled Father Jiang.

"We still have a plot of land over at Stone Gulch. Nothing grows there and it's all gone to waste. Next time we go back, we'll clear it out and plant some glutinous rice," Father Jiang brought up the land out of nowhere.

"It's all your fault. I told you not to buy it back then, but you insisted. As a result, you planted crops for two years and lost money for two years," Mrs. Zhao started nagging again.

Father Jiang just smiled sheepishly.

"Oh, the pimples on my face seem to be gone!" After gnawing on the glutinous rice chicken for a while, the rabbit suddenly realized the blemishes on her face had vanished!

Jiang Chengyan looked up, glanced at Mrs. Zhao, and then continued tearing off chicken meat for her.

Mrs. Zhao snorted. "You've got no eye for men, and thank goodness I'm here. If I weren't around, the pain would have you crying to your ancestors!"

No sooner had Mrs. Zhao finished speaking than Jiang Chengyan saw the rabbit hauling her small wooden stool and scooting right up beside Mrs. Zhao.

"Ah-yan, your father has a favor to ask of you." While eating, Father Jiang's expression turned serious. It seemed as though he had spent a long time gathering his thoughts before finally speaking to Jiang Chengyan.

Jiang Chengyan was currently wiping Bai Yan's hands. Hearing Father Jiang's words, he raised his gaze in genuine surprise.

After all, Father Jiang rarely looked so solemn.

"The business at the carpentry workshop is getting better and better, but it also requires more and more timber. I might be running around frequently these days, so your father was wondering if you could accompany your mother?"

If Jiang Chengyan and Bai Yan were to return to the village today, and Father Jiang left as well, Mrs. Zhao would be left all alone in the backyard, something Father Jiang ultimately couldn't rest easy about.

Before Jiang Chengyan could speak, Bai Yan eagerly clapped her paws together. "We'll stay! Right, Husband?"

Jiang Chengyan pursed his lips and remained silent.

At that moment, Bai Yan suddenly fished a silver banknote out from inside her clothes, shoved it straight into Jiang Chengyan's hand, and smiled with her eyes crinkled into crescents. "Right? Husband?"

Jiang Chengyan raised an eyebrow and reached out to pinch the back of her neck. "Have you even learned how to offer bribes now?"
