Jiang Family

Jiang’s father changed Jiang Cheng’an into some quiet clothes, gave him medicine, then sat on a stool and sighed.

“Mother, I knew something was wrong. He hasn’t eaten for days, just grabbed several eggs and went out. Those eggs are precious, we save them for the children, but in the end, they ended up in someone else’s stomach.” Jiang’s father lowered his head, feeling guilty. “It’s my fault for being too useless as a father.”

“Haven’t you heard? Master Shen’s son is arrogant and unruly, often thrown out of his house. When he’s got nothing to eat, he’ll bully others naturally.” Madam Zhao sat at the edge of the kang bed. Seeing her son safe, she briskly said to Jiang’s father, “Go slaughter another chicken. Cheng’an is badly hurt, he needs nourishment.”

Jiang’s father always cared for his family. Hearing his son needed to recover, he didn’t hesitate and hurried to do as she said.

Watching his figure disappear outside, Madam Zhao sighed deeply.

When Jiang Chengyan came in carrying Bai Yan, Jiang’s father had already cleaned up the chicken.

“Father, where’s my mother?” Jiang Chengyan asked directly, wanting to see Madam Zhao.

Madam Zhao stepped out of the little storeroom, holding a small cloth bundle. Hearing the question, she replied expressionlessly, “I’m right here.”

“Go inside and hide, don’t let anyone see the bloodstains on you.” Jiang Chengyan set Bai Yan down, gave her a few instructions, then walked toward Madam Zhao.

Madam Zhao didn’t really want to deal with Jiang Chengyan. She kept her head down, carefully sorting the wild grass roots in her cloth bundle.

“Why did you let Bai Yan get embroiled in trouble again? What if someone finds out?” Jiang Chengyan sat on the wooden bench, speaking to his mother with no hint of politeness.

His tone clearly annoyed Madam Zhao.

She was always quick-tempered. Hearing this, she instantly threw her cloth bundle straight at Jiang Chengyan.

“You think I did it for myself? If I’d simply brought Cheng’an back and left that person alone in the field, he’d come after us once he woke up, dragging in Cheng’an and even your wife. But with the chicken blood disguise, everyone will stand on our side. Even if Master Shen finds out his son beat someone bloody, he’s still in the wrong! Our family won’t have any worries, and your wife is safe too!” Madam Zhao spoke crisply, laying out the whole matter in just a few sentences.

Jiang Chengyan looked at her with a half-smile.

Madam Zhao said nothing more. Mother and son seemed to be playing a silent game, then Madam Zhao took the bundle and left.

As she walked out, Jiang Chengyan caught a faint herbal scent, much like the one from last night’s chicken soup…

Since the Jiang family had no clothes for Bai Yan, after she changed out of the bloodstained outfit, she donned one of Madam Zhao’s.

Seeing Madam Zhao enter the kitchen, Bai Yan ignored Jiang Chengyan, grabbed a small stool, and hurried after her.

“What are you doing in here? Were you starved to death in a past life? You’re in the way.” Madam Zhao snapped, turning her back to start cooking the chicken.

Bai Yan said nothing, just grinned and stared at Madam Zhao.

Madam Zhao had no patience for her.

Just then, Bai Yan suddenly began scratching her arm.

“Is your arm itchy?” Jiang Chengyan walked in from outside and pulled Bai Yan to her feet.

Bai Yan nodded, letting Jiang Chengyan roll up her sleeve.

“What’s wrong? So delicate—are you having an allergic reaction again?” Madam Zhao leaned over to look.

Jiang Chengyan replied in a bland tone, “Your clothes are terrible. They’re scratching her.”

Madam Zhao’s face flushed with embarrassment, then she erupted, roaring, “Get out of here!”
