Just as Madam Hua had barely caught her breath, the young girl in front of her looked at her with utter seriousness and said, “Grandma, your skin isn’t very good. Eating little mushrooms can make your face look better.”

While Bai Yan was speaking, Jiang Chengyan stood beside her the whole time, watching.

Madam Hua’s anger flared at once. Especially when she saw how tender and flawless the girl’s skin was, she could no longer hold back. Spitting all over as she talked, she snapped at Bai Yan, “Where did this little yellow-haired brat come from? Get lost at once. Who wants your mushrooms? Do you think this place is a market?”

At the shower of spit, Bai Yan tilted her head and hurriedly hid into Jiang Chengyan’s embrace.

“Husband, let’s go.” Bai Yan tugged at Jiang Chengyan’s clothes and said softly.

Jiang Chengyan glanced at Madam Hua, then put an arm around Bai Yan and led her outside.

At last, when they came out of the pleasure house, Bai Yan wrinkled her nose, as though the air outside were much fresher.

“Husband, she kept spitting,” Bai Yan muttered on and on while Jiang Chengyan held her hand.

“Have you forgotten what you were doing when you were letting off gas?” Jiang Chengyan arched a brow.

Bai Yan puffed out her cheeks, and in the next instant, her spirit deflated.

After the young couple had left, Madam Hua suddenly pushed open the window and let her gaze linger for a long while on that bouncing little girl.

The figure was not bad at all. If she were placed in a pleasure house to receive guests, she would surely make a great deal of money.

The young couple walked on, and Bai Yan loved excitement. Halfway there, they happened to come across a street performance. The moment Bai Yan saw a crowd gathered to watch monkeys jumping through flaming rings, she could not take another step.

Jiang Chengyan reached out to stop her, but when he turned back, his little wife was already shamelessly sitting on the ground again.

“Want to watch?” Jiang Chengyan looked down at the little wife crouching on the ground.

Bai Yan nodded and looked up at him with pleading eyes.

“Then watch.” His eyes darkened slightly, and then he pulled her to her feet.

But the instant Bai Yan saw the excitement, she forgot all about Jiang Chengyan. She immediately let go of his hand and rushed forward eagerly, vanishing into the crowd in no time.

“Don’t run off. Do you hear me?” Jiang Chengyan said as Bai Yan was about to disappear from sight.

When Bai Yan heard that, she nodded with obvious perfunctoriness, then darted ahead to watch the performance.

The monkey leaped through the fire ring, and someone else was breathing out flames. One amusing act after another drew waves of cheers from the crowd, and more and more people gathered around to watch.

In order to find a better viewing spot, Bai Yan kept shifting from place to place, looking here and there, entirely forgetting Jiang Chengyan behind her.

She was utterly absorbed in the commotion, clapping her little paws and crying out in delight.

The little monkey nimbly darted through the flaming ring, then agilely sprang onto a group of boys stacked in a human tower. Bai Yan was just about to cheer when, the next moment, a pair of large hands suddenly covered her with a cloth and, amid the chaos, dragged her backward.

Before she could even cry out, she was already being muffled and hauled away. Only then did she remember that she had forgotten even where her husband was.

The cheers still seemed to ring faintly in her ears, but all that remained before Bai Yan was a dreadful darkness.

When Bai Yan opened her eyes, the first sense to reach her was not sight but smell. What filled the tip of her nose was a thick, overpowering scent of powder.

“Little girl, are you still selling mushrooms now?”
