Chapter 96: The Rabbit’s Stress Response
In the dim room, thick with the stench of powder and cosmetics, White Yan stared at the face of the flower girl so close before her. She trembled all at once and instinctively leaned back slightly.
But just then, as she drew away, a low chuckle sounded from behind her.
White Yan had not realized there was someone at her back. Startled so suddenly, her head tilted and she nearly fainted on the spot.
Yet the makeup scent in the room was so overpowering that it stabbed at her temples with a splitting pain.
“Stop laughing, Jade. Come over here and strip her clothes off,” said Madam Flower, narrowing her eyes. She had coveted this girl’s garments for a long time. “Just look at the fabric. It’s clearly top quality. Take it off.”
White Yan’s body reacted in panic, shivering without pause. Her outer robe was yanked away, and then she was shoved into another garish one. But the moment she put it on, the wrists where the cloth touched her skin began to itch fiercely, leaving her deeply uncomfortable.
“Take her to wash up, then send her over to Boss Gold,” Madam Flower said, twisting the fine robe stolen from White Yan around her own body as she spoke to the woman called Jade.
Jade nodded and grabbed White Yan by the arm.
“Well, well, little miss, you’re shaking all over. What are you afraid of? Boss Gold is quite the catch, and it’s rare for him to come by in the daytime to support our business.” When Jade hauled White Yan upright and saw her trembling, she could not help but let out a mocking laugh.
Perhaps it was because they had wallowed too long in such filth that the moment they encountered someone so clean, the seed of corruption in their hearts began to sprout, eager to drag that person down into the mire as well.
White Yan was half-carried along. Powder was smeared onto her face, her hair was pinned up, and dangling ornaments were added to her head. Throughout it all she remained like a wooden doll, until at last she was shoved into a room.
The instant the door shut behind her, White Yan’s body jolted again. Then she saw Boss Gold seated ahead, drinking from a cup.
Living up to his name, Boss Gold shared White Yan’s taste exactly: thick gold chains hung around his neck and wrists. But seeing that bloated, greasy man sitting there with a sinister smile made White Yan’s feet feel rooted to the floor; she could not move them even an inch.
“Oh? So this is the little beauty you brought me. Come here and let me enjoy myself properly,” Boss Gold said at once when he spotted the fresh, delicate White Yan. He rose and walked straight toward her.
“Boss Gold, this one is a rare beauty indeed. Madam Flower has specially reserved her for you. Please, enjoy yourself,” came Jade’s giggling voice from outside. Then sounded the click of a lock being shut, unmistakably the room’s door being secured.
It was broad daylight outside, yet every curtain in the room had been drawn, leaving not a trace of light. Only the candles that had been lit kept any glow alive.
And with it like that, the room seemed no different from night.
White Yan’s body would not stop trembling. But just as Boss Gold was about to reach her, the hand she had already scratched raw suddenly clenched tightly, and her eyes fixed themselves hard on the greasy, obese man before her.
“Little beauty, why resist so much?”
Boss Gold’s hand was already about to touch her shoulder.
White Yan moved both hands, already prepared to hurl the man straight out the window. But just as Boss Gold was about to touch her shoulder, a black figure flashed like a ghost and suddenly stood between them.
