Chapter 49 The Altered Color

Faced with Zhao Yu’s inquiry, Chai Dao showed no reaction.
Zhao Yu was curious: “Were you just talking in your sleep?”
Still no response from Chai Dao.
“Looks like you had a nightmare,” Zhao Yu suddenly understood the truth.
Just as he was about to enter the bedroom, he hesitated and took Chai Dao down to hang it back on the wall.
Since his wife wasn’t in seclusion now, late at night... what if Chai Dao suddenly woke up?
*Creak...*
He glanced inside the bedroom.
His wife wasn’t asleep yet, sitting on the edge of the bed with her fingers intertwined in front of her.
Seeing Zhao Yu, Ying in red spoke gently, “Husband.”
“Wife, why are you still awake so late? Staying up harms your health.”
“You haven’t come yet, husband,” Ying blushed and turned her head away.
Zhao Yu felt that his wife in red truly stirred a different kind of restlessness in his heart than when she wore white.
He touched the door and closed it tightly.
Walking to the bedside, he lowered the curtain to prevent anything in the room from suddenly coming to life and peeping.
Because of this thought, Zhao Yu couldn’t help but pat his head. “Oh, how could I forget again?”
“What did you forget, husband?” The red-clad Ying’s eyes were full of concern.
Zhao Yu didn’t hide it: “There’s a necklace in Maruko’s room that’s possessed. I feel like it might want to eat someone. I always mean to tell Maruko to get rid of it but often forget in the busy rush.”
“Then tomorrow, I will remind you, husband.”
After saying this, Ying shyly lowered her head: “It’s late now, let’s... rest.”
(One million words omitted here)
With the omitted part, Ying in red leaned slowly against Zhao Yu’s shoulder and fell asleep.
A happy family scene.
Following the usual pattern, Zhao Yu wouldn’t wake until the next day.
Unexpectedly, as often happens, something unusual took place.
In the middle of the night, Zhao Yu was drifting in and out of sleep when he suddenly felt a sharp sting on his wrist.
He instinctively rubbed his eyes and opened them.
Just in time to see his wife biting his hand.
Seeing Zhao Yu awake, Ying tilted her head, a strange emotion flashing in her eyes.
Zhao Yu was puzzled: “Wife, what are you doing?”
He reached out to look and his face instantly turned pale.

He was actually bleeding!
On his wrist, there was a clear set of teeth marks, bright red drops of blood slowly spreading.
“Didn’t your broken sword warn you? I want to eat you!”
In a slightly crazed voice, the room abruptly turned into boundless darkness; countless tentacles appeared out of nowhere and instantly bound Zhao Yu tightly.
“Wife, if you want to eat me, wait until tomorrow to cook me first. Eating me raw isn’t good,” Zhao Yu painstakingly moved his fingers, unraveling the tentacle ropes and pulling Ying’s hand to reason with her.
Ying’s eyes turned venomous again, and once more she controlled the tentacles to tie Zhao Yu up.
But once again, Zhao Yu untied himself.
Ying could no longer hold back: “I said, I want to eat you!”
With a roar, a huge bloodthirsty mouth opened wide.
Zhao Yu had no choice but to hold her in his arms: “Alright, alright, if you want to eat me, go ahead. After all, you’re my wife.”
Ying immediately bit Zhao Yu’s hand, tearing and gnawing hard.
After a long time, she couldn’t tear off the skin but drank several drops of blood.
When it seemed enough, Zhao Yu finally asked with concern: “Wife, are you feeling better?”
Ying licked the blood from her lips, half-enjoying, half-puzzled: “You should be wary of me... not to mention that broken sword’s warning...”
Zhao Yu held her close: “You’re my wife. If I don’t trust you, who else would I trust? Wife, I’ll tell you, in this home, you’re the one I trust most, then my brother and little sister-in-law, and only then Chai Dao.”
“With husband like this, maybe that sword will be very sad,” Ying’s voice was faint.
Zhao Yu sniffed.
His wife’s natural fragrance suddenly grew much stronger.
He looked down.
Her clothes weren’t red, but white!
Zhao Yu instantly became happy... He knew he would never mistake her!
Sure enough, whether in red or white, she was still his wife; the red clothes just meant she was unwell.
In his joy, Zhao Yu hugged her and kissed her: “It’s okay, it’s okay. He knows. I told him—I trust you the most, and he’s fourth.”
Faced with Zhao Yu’s sincerity, Ying in white fell silent.
After a long while, Ying asked in puzzlement: “Husband, if I really want to eat you someday, what will you do?”
Zhao Yu’s gaze grew unusually serious.
Ying stared at him, her white dress seeming to stain red as if soaked in blood.
“Wife, I... I won’t hide it from you anymore.”
Pausing, Zhao Yu’s eyes filled with sorrow: “Since I started cultivating, I’ve become a short-lived ghost. I can only live for eight hundred years... Death is death, sooner or later. If eating me makes you happy, then I’ll be happy too.”
“You’re my wife. If I don’t care for you, who else would?”
After speaking, Zhao Yu hugged Ying again: “Wife, how about this? You wait until I’m 799 years old to eat me.”

“Are you afraid of death?” Ying’s voice turned hoarse.
Zhao Yu’s eyes shimmered with tears: “I want to spend more time with you before I go.”
Every time he thought about his short lifespan, his heart sank.
Ying stiffened, silently leaning against Zhao Yu, her clothes half red, half white.
After a long time.
Ying whispered: “Husband, from now on, please don’t come to the bedroom at night.”
Zhao Yu said nothing, only shook his head firmly.
If he didn’t come to the bedroom at night, he couldn’t very well sleep on the courtyard floor... He wasn’t foolish enough to ignore the bed.
Thinking this through, Zhao Yu comforted her: “Wife, don’t worry. You’re just sick. I’ve found a way to cure you! There’s a recipe for the Seven-Colored Mysterious Pill in the study. Once I gather all the ingredients, I’ll cook the medicine for you. You’ll get better.”
“It can’t be cured.”
Zhao Yu hurried to explain: “Wife, you don’t know, the Seven-Colored Mysterious Pill recipe is said to cure anything.”
“Husband, let’s rest now. If you truly want to cure me... ask that broken sword tomorrow. It should know what to do.” Ying seemed unwilling to continue the conversation.
Zhao Yu was shocked: “Chai Dao actually knows?”
He always knew Chai Dao was unreliable! And here he was treating it like a good friend!
The two lay back down and began to rest.
.......
The next day.
Zhao Yu woke up from a long sleep, stretched lazily, and got up.
His wife was already up and not in the room.
He got up and went outside.
Chai Dao was still hanging on the wall.
Maruko was sitting upright in the courtyard, a rare serious posture.
His wife, however, was standing at the courtyard gate dressed in bright red, staring into the distance, unsure what she was looking at.
After taking a moment to observe, Zhao Yu picked up Chai Dao and hurried to the study.
Once inside, he closed the door.
He placed Chai Dao on the table, his expression grim.
“Zhao Yu, Zhao Yu, why that face? Don’t scare me...” Chai Dao’s human face appeared, looking somewhat helpless.
Zhao Yu’s expression grew even sterner: “You tell me, how many times have you lied to me!”
