Volume One, Chapter 11: Bitter Regret!
Fu Mingyue’s charming peach-blossom eyes abruptly darkened, then he heard Ji Yunci continue, “When I was little, they called me fatherless and motherless, a bastard. When they bullied me, you saved me. Now I’m giving my life back to you, is that enough?”
Limping painfully, Ji Yunci staggered toward Li Susu, nearly misstepping several times. The rescuers stood frozen in shock, wanting to intervene but afraid their actions might startle Ji Yunci, whose emotions were clearly unstable.
By now, some patients and their families from the inpatient ward had heard the commotion and rushed up to the rooftop, all holding up their phones to film Ji Yunci, Li Susu, and Fu Mingyue.
Li Susu was stunned. She had only intended to make Ji Yunci understand her determination.
But now...
Seeing so many people recording, Li Susu’s intuition told her something was terribly wrong. She choked back tears and said urgently, “Yunci! Don’t do this!”
Ji Yunci looked up at her with a clear, serene gaze. “If you want me dead, then be happy.”
With that, standing very close to Li Susu, she turned sideways, her back to the void, and decisively fell backward—resolute and unwavering.
Everyone on the rooftop gasped, completely unprepared for such a swift and final act.
Fu Mingyue froze in shock...
“Heavens!”
From the ground below came a chorus of shocked cries.
“Bang!”
The heavy impact echoed loudly.
Only then did Fu Mingyue react, rushing forward, climbing over the water barrier, and seeing Ji Yunci lying below.
From eight floors up, Ji Yunci’s slender figure looked even smaller.
In a daze, Fu Mingyue seemed to see the seven- or eight-year-old Ji Yunci again—beautiful and stubborn, her eyes sparkling with starlight when she saw him. To her, he was her whole world; his arrival lit up her entire world.
“Yunci...” Fu Mingyue called out, distraught.
Li Susu grabbed his arm. “Mingyue! It’s okay. The firefighters have already laid out safety cushions. Yunci fell onto them. She’s going to be fine!”
Fu Mingyue heard her and his unfocused gaze gradually cleared, but his heart felt as if it were being sliced by a dull blade, pain so sharp he almost couldn’t breathe.
---
“I’m sorry. It’s all my fault. I lost control and didn’t expect...” Li Susu’s tears welled up.
But Fu Mingyue didn’t comfort her as usual. Instead, he stared blankly at the ground below. Seeing the medical staff rushing to treat Ji Yunci, he opened his mouth but said nothing.
“Let’s go down and see.” Li Susu urged quickly.
Fu Mingyue nodded and followed Li Susu downstairs.
As they exited the elevator, Ji Yunfan returned, looking frantic.
“Susu!” Ji Yunfan immediately grabbed Li Susu’s arm. “Are you okay? Why would you be so desperate as to try to jump?”
“Let go of her,” Fu Mingyue frowned, pulling Ji Yunfan’s hand away. “It wasn’t Susu who jumped—it was Yunci.”
Ji Yunfan froze. “What? What do you mean Yunci jumped?”
“Step aside!” Fu Mingyue pushed past Ji Yunfan and hurried toward Ji Yunci’s hospital room.
Ji Yunfan, still confused, instinctively followed.
But Ji Yunci hadn’t returned to her room.
Ji Yunfan stared at the empty room, finally realizing what had happened. She grabbed Fu Mingyue by the collar. “What’s going on? Where is Yunci? Explain!”
“It’s all my fault,” Li Susu sobbed uncontrollably. “I got emotional and went up to the rooftop. Someone thought I was going to jump, and Mingyue misunderstood and brought Yunci up to find me. But Yunci jumped instead. It’s all my fault...”
Li Susu, overwhelmed by guilt, turned away and fainted onto the floor.
“Susu!” Fu Mingyue quickly helped her up, seeing her face pale, and hurriedly laid her on a hospital bed.
Ji Yunfan rushed out to call the doctor. Both of them stayed by Li Susu’s side.
After the doctor confirmed she was fine—just fainted from emotional distress—they finally calmed down.
Fu Mingyue made a call and learned that Ji Yunci had not only broken her arm but had further injured herself and was currently in surgery. She was still alive. Only then did he breathe a sigh of relief—only to be punched in the face by Ji Yunfan!
“I just left and Yunci jumped! Fu Shao, you really are something!” Ji Yunfan shouted before storming off to the operating room where Ji Yunci was undergoing surgery.
Fu Mingyue wiped the blood from the corner of his lips just as Steward He hurried over. “Young master! Who hit you?!”
Fu Mingyue said nothing but recalled the hateful look in Ji Yunci’s eyes when he had struck her, causing her lip to bleed. His breath tightened.
What exactly had he done?
---
“Are there surveillance cameras in the private ward?” Fu Mingyue asked.
“Yes,” Steward He nodded.
“Review the footage from Ji Yunci’s room,” Fu Mingyue ordered.
“All right, I’ll take care of it.” Although unclear about the situation, Steward He was efficient.
Soon, Fu Mingyue obtained the footage from Ji Yunci’s room and watched her conversation with Li Susu.
Li Susu’s humble apology pained him deeply. Through the glass door, he looked at Li Susu lying unconscious on the bed, his eyes full of pity. Then he heard Ji Yunci recounting her childhood and youth, and he immediately glanced at the tablet.
In the footage, Ji Yunci stood by the window, shrouded in profound loneliness, confusion, and despair, suffocating Fu Mingyue’s heart.
Then Li Susu spoke about her inability to conceive, and Fu Mingyue’s eyes widened in shock. He looked again at the motionless Li Susu in bed as Ji Yunci’s voice echoed from the tablet: “...I will have a child with Fu Mingyue.”
Fu Mingyue clenched the tablet tightly.
His phone rang, displaying “Father” on the screen.
He turned off the tablet screen and answered, “Dad.”
“You good-for-nothing! What have you been doing today?” Fu’s father scolded through the phone. “You should consider yourself lucky it’s past three o’clock and the market is closed. Now hurry up and get those ridiculous trending topics taken down!”
“What trending topics?” Fu Mingyue was completely clueless. “Ji Yunci’s jumpI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
