Volume One, Chapter 12: The Histrionic Personality!
“She’s still in surgery,” Fu Mingyue said, his voice tightening as he recalled Ji Yunci’s desperate leap from the building. “I’ve seen the trending topics online. We’ve already assigned people to suppress them. Let’s wait until Yunci’s surgery is over before dealing with anything else.”
Fu’s father furrowed his brow, his tone growing graver and more authoritative. “Return to the old residence immediately after the surgery! Have Xiao He arrange for bodyguards. Don’t let anyone capture any more embarrassing moments.”
“I...” Fu Mingyue started to protest.
“That’s final. Hang up.”
Fu’s father didn’t want to waste words. If this matter dragged on, the Fu family would become a laughingstock.
Out of ten trending topics, three involved the Fu family—and all were unfavorable.
After a moment’s thought, Fu’s father made another call. “Old Zhao, buy some trending topics. Just say my daughter-in-law has some kind of personality disorder, something about being dramatic—yes, that’s it, histrionic personality disorder.”
Just as he hung up, his phone vibrated again, displaying Li Zhong’s name. He didn’t answer immediately. Four years ago, when the Fu family went bankrupt and hit their lowest point, the Li family chose to marry their daughter off to someone else. Fu’s father was no sentimental fool like Fu Mingyue; he remembered everything clearly.
Fu’s mother, less guarded, tried to reason with him. “Although Susu has been married once, she’s still much better than Ji Yunci, who comes from a small rural family. Besides, the Li family has done well in Beijing. Isn’t that where you wanted Mingyue to develop his career?”
“Get out first,” Fu’s father said. Before the call could stop ringing, he answered it.
Hearing him exchange pleasantries politely with Li Zhong, Fu’s mother stopped nagging and left the study.
...
At the hospital, Fu Mingyue approached the operating room but didn’t see Ji Yunfan, who usually arrived earlier.
“Where is he?” Fu asked.
Butler He was momentarily stunned before realizing who was being asked about. He quickly replied, “I think he was called away by a phone call from his manager.”
Fu was about to sneer when the operating room lights went out. When the doctor emerged, Fu didn’t immediately step forward to inquire.
Butler He glanced at him and stepped forward, asking, “Doctor, how is the young lady’s injury?”
“Injured even worse—she has a comminuted fracture,” the doctor said, looking at Fu Mingyue. “If you family members can’t provide a proper environment for her recovery, it’s better if you don’t come.”
Fu’s expression darkened slightly. Butler He hastened to apologize, “We’re truly sorry. Next steps...”
“Discharge her,” Fu Mingyue interrupted.
Butler He was stunned, and the doctor was incredulous. “Are you willing to let her hand become disabled?”
Fu Mingyue frowned irritably. “It’s only an external injury. Besides, the Fu family has its own private doctor.”
“You...” The doctor’s anger flared, but a nurse quickly interjected, “You’re family, so it’s your decision. Just sign the waiver.”
The doctor held back, knowing the hospital had received many donations from the Fu family and was practically their private hospital. He could not confront the “boss” directly but reminded them in the spirit of medical ethics, “Her hand must not be injured again, or she will definitely be disabled!”
Disabled...
Fu Mingyue lowered his eyes slightly, his hand instinctively clenching into a fist.
Seeing his silence, Butler He quickly said, “Understood, thank you, doctor. We’ll handle the discharge procedures...”
“Do as you please,” the doctor said, shaking his head as he walked away.
In this day and age, money is power.
The operating room door opened again, and a nurse wheeled out Ji Yunci, still unconscious.
She had been unconscious when rescued, and with Fu Mingyue present, the surgery was performed under anesthesia.
Fu Mingyue looked at her pale, gaunt face and felt an even greater heaviness in his chest. The situation was limbo, suffocating him deeply.
As Ji Yunci was about to be pushed out of sight, he instinctively moved to follow but heard Li Susu’s voice.
“Mingyue.”
Fu Mingyue stopped and turned to see Li Susu approaching anxiously. “How is Yunci?”
“Why don’t you rest properly?”
“I’m fine. Was that Yunci just now?”
“Yes.” When Fu Mingyue looked back, Ji Yunci was already out of sight.
“How is she?” Li Susu’s voice was full of worry and guilt. “If anything happens to Yunci, I would never forgive myself. I shouldn’t have come back to the country... I—”
“Don’t say that,” Fu Mingyue interrupted with a frown. “Whether you return or not, I would divorce Yunci. She’s unstable and pushed things to this extreme.”
Li Susu immediately burst into tears. “Why would Yunci do such a thing? Life is so precious, and having a healthy body is even more so. How could she not cherish it?”
Her words instantly reminded Fu Mingyue of Li Susu’s own health condition, and his heart ached. “You…”
“I’m fine.” Li Susu quickly wiped her tears and smiled brightly. “All these years have taught me that facing life with a smile can never be too bad.”
Fu Mingyue looked at her, sensing the hidden sorrow beneath her forced strength and optimism. His heart ached even more, and he pulled her into his arms. “With me here, you won’t suffer anymore.”
Li Susu wanted to cling to Fu Mingyue but restrained herself. “Let’s wait and see. Let’s go check on Yunci first.”
Seeing her hesitation, Fu Mingyue knew she was worried about Ji Yunci. He blurted out, “The divorce papers are signed. You’re not the other woman.”
“Thank you,” Li Susu smiled softly. “I really don’t want to hurt Yunci. I just looked at the trending topics—almost all the public opinion is unfavorable to the Fu family. Is uncle angry?”
Fu Mingyue nodded, rubbing his brow. “He wants me to bring Yunci back to the old residence immediately. You’ll come too.”
“This…” Li Susu frowned slightly. “Isn’t that inappropriate?”
“There’s nothing inappropriate. I’ve already told my parents about our situation. They don’t oppose it.”
“But Yunci…”
“We can’t just let her do as she pleases. Since it’s come to this, it’s better to be decisive and cut ties cleanly.”
Li Susu still looked hesitant when Butler He came over. “Young master, the discharge procedures are complete.”
“Good. Is the security all arranged?” Fu Mingyue asked.
“Rest assured.”
Fu Mingyue nodded and looked at Li Susu. “Let’s go. I’ll take you home.”
Li Susu’s eyes reddened instantly, deeply moved. “Mingyue...”
Fu Mingyue hated to see her like this and immediately held her slender form close.
Butler He, unable to bear it any longer, said, “Young master, there are more and more reporters and paparazzi outside. We should leave quickly.”
“All right.” Fu Mingyue clasped Li Susu’s hand, their fingers entwined tightly as they headed out of the hospital.
At this moment, Ji Yunci had been transferred onto a stretcher and loaded into the Fu family’s private ambulance.
After much tossing and turning, Ji Yunci regained some awareness and vaguely sensed she was being moved. She opened her eyes warily.
Before her eyes stretched a sea of blood. It hurt so much...
