“Young man, buying a candied hawthorn skewer for your girlfriend?”

The vendor cheerfully took down a skewer. “Here, let me pick out a big one for you!”

Lin Chen paid, then lifted his chin. “She’s not my girlfriend. She’s my wife! We’re legally married!”

The vendor froze for a moment before exclaiming, “Goodness, I thought this young lady was quite young. You’re already married? What a perfect match!”

Xu Mi’s face flushed crimson. “Uncle, I’m actually not that young…”

“How are you old?” Lin Chen interrupted. “My wife looks just like a girl in her early twenties!”

That was not entirely untrue.

Xu Mi had always been slender, and after spending so long in the hospital, she looked even more delicate and petite. With her naturally small face and fair, tender skin, she did indeed appear quite young at first glance.

“Why do you tell everyone we’re married?” Xu Mi asked, somewhat embarrassed. “It makes you sound like you’re showing off!”

“That’s exactly what I’m doing,” Lin Chen declared proudly. “I married such a beautiful wife, so of course I have to brag a little!”

As he spoke, he turned to a young couple passing by. “This is my wife. Isn’t she beautiful?”

The pair stared blankly at him. Once they recovered, they nodded in unison. “She really is beautiful.”

Xu Mi was already too embarrassed to lift her head. She gave Lin Chen a punch. “You’re impossible! I’m not going out anymore. I’m going home!”

If this continued, Lin Chen would probably show their marriage certificate to every dog they passed.

She truly had no face left to stay out there!

“What? We’re going home already? We just came out!”

“If we don’t go back now, you’ll have humiliated me completely!”

“Humiliated you… Wife, you actually dislike me for embarrassing you? I don’t want to live anymore!”

“It’s not that I dislike you… Forget it, I really do dislike you a little. If you keep showing off to everyone we meet, I’ll never forgive you! We’re going home right now!”

In the end, Lin Chen could not win the argument. He obediently pushed her wheelchair home.

The moment they entered, he perked up again.

“Wife, go back to the bedroom first. I’ll fetch some water and wash your feet, then give you a massage!”

Xu Mi’s face reddened. “You’re still going to massage me?”

It was all unbearably embarrassing!

Lin Chen put on a serious expression. “Why wouldn’t I? Your legs need plenty of massage before they can regain their strength.”

“Besides, I’m your husband. Don’t be polite with me. Just wait here obediently!”

With that, he unwrapped the candied hawthorn and handed it to her. Then he brought out the tablet computer.

“Your only job is to eat your candied hawthorn and watch your show. Just wait for your humble servant to take care of you!”

Xu Mi giggled at his antics and tentatively took a bite.

In an instant, the sweet-and-sour flavor filled her entire mouth.

Xu Mi narrowed her eyes. She felt that she had never been this happy in her life.

By the time the massage was over, Xu Mi was sleepy, but she clung to Lin Chen’s clothes and refused to let go.

“What’s wrong?” Lin Chen asked nervously. “Wife, are you feeling uncomfortable somewhere?”

“No…”

Her pretty face flushed slightly as she stammered, “Are you… are you still going to sleep in the room next door tonight?”

When she had woken that morning and found herself alone in bed, the fear and unease had been overwhelming. She did not want to go through that a second time.

Xu Mi knew perfectly well that she had already grown accustomed to Lin Chen’s presence.

But she simply could not bring herself to ask him to stay the night.

Lin Chen understood at once. “If you want me to sleep here, then I won’t go next door.”

Then he quickly added, “But don’t worry. Until you’ve fully recovered, I absolutely won’t do anything improper!”

Xu Mi could not help asking, “What about after I’ve recovered?”

The instant the words left her mouth, she was overcome with embarrassment. She promptly lay down, pulled the covers over her face, and hid beneath them.

Lin Chen stared at her in astonishment, then laughed. “We’ll talk about that after you’ve recovered! Go to sleep first. I’ll take a shower and come right back.”

Only after hearing his footsteps fade away did Xu Mi pull down the covers. Her face was flushed from the heat, but the corners of her lips remained lifted.

Before long, Lin Chen had finished showering.

The moment Xu Mi heard his footsteps, she closed her eyes and pretended to be asleep.

She felt the mattress sink slightly. A warm body then moved closer to her.

“Wife, let me hold you while we sleep!”

Xu Mi did not answer. Instead, she cooperatively lifted her head, allowing Lin Chen to slide his arm beneath her. She nestled completely into his embrace.

Listening to his familiar heartbeat, she contentedly closed her eyes.

A short while later, her breathing became steady, and she drifted into a sweet dream.

Lin Chen, however, was suffering in silence.

As a vigorous young man, he had a soft, fragrant beauty in his arms—his legal wife, no less—yet he could do nothing.

Who could understand this kind of torment?

Still, no matter how difficult it was, whenever he thought of Xu Mi’s condition, Lin Chen gritted his teeth and endured.

The next morning, however, he rose with dark circles beneath his eyes.

“Oh my goodness, Little Chen, did you not sleep last night?”

Aunt Zhou was startled when she came to make breakfast. Then she frowned. “Tangtang is still so weak and hasn’t recovered yet. You need to exercise some restraint!”

“That sort of thing takes a heavy toll on men, and it harms women too! You mustn’t be reckless!”

Xu Mi happened to get up just then. Hearing those words, she immediately blushed scarlet.

Lin Chen’s face reddened as well, and he hurriedly explained, “Aunt Zhou, it’s not what you think… Oh, never mind. You’ve misunderstood!”

There was no way to explain the matter, so he simply made a quick escape under the pretense of needing the bathroom.

After breakfast, Xu Mi maneuvered her wheelchair and accompanied Lin Chen to the door.

Then she gave him a sweet smile. “Go to work! I’ll wait for you at home.”

Lin Chen looked at her, his heart stirring. He could no longer restrain himself. Bending down, he kissed her cheek.

Xu Mi froze for a moment. Watching Lin Chen flee as though his life depended on it, she could not help laughing.

Thinking about that kiss, Lin Chen walked with a spring in his step.

He arrived at the company, clocked in, and went to his office to begin the day’s work.

As a newcomer, he had to learn the company’s rules while familiarizing himself with his various duties. Once he got serious, there was quite a lot to do.

It was not until his stomach began to rumble that he realized it was already lunchtime.

“I’m starving!”

Jiang Yao began to shout. “Come on, come on! Daddy’s taking you to lunch!”

Lin Chen casually rolled a document on his desk into a tube and pointed it at Jiang Yao.

“You insolent son! How dare you speak such treasonous words!”

After a bout of playful fighting, the two of them left the office and headed for the company cafeteria on the first floor.

As a fairly well-known domestic company, Honey Candy Biotechnology offered excellent employee benefits.

For one thing, its cafeteria charged only five yuan per meal, providing three dishes and one soup, including two meat dishes. That alone was enough to make employees at other companies green with envy.

The cafeteria was divided into sections. The employees’ area was on the left, while the management area was on the right.

As usual, Lin Chen and Jiang Yao went to the employees’ section to get their food. They had barely joined the queue when Shen Wei arrived.

“Good afternoon, President Shen!”

“What brings you to our section, President Shen? Are you thinking of trying the employees’ meals?”

“President Shen, come over here! I’ll save your place in line!”

It was lunchtime, and the employees were relaxed. They greeted him one after another.

Lin Chen paid them no attention.

At that moment, his eyes held only the braised pork and the platter of roast goose.

But just then, Shen Wei walked over to him.

“Little Lin, Little Jiang, come with me for a moment.”
