Volume 1, Chapter 38: May Fortune Favor You

Xu Mi was not feeling well, so the planned outing naturally fell through.

Lin Chen felt a sense of regret, but Xu Mi didn't mind.

"Don't be sad! If today doesn't work, there's always next time! When you're on vacation, how about we go climb Baiyun Mountain?"

Mentioning Baiyun Mountain reminded Lin Chen of the vow he had made before the Buddha that day.

Now that Xu Mi not only hadn't divorced him but their relationship was growing better by the day, it was only right to go back and offer his thanks. Thinking of this, Lin Chen nodded immediately. "Alright! Let's go climb the mountain this weekend!"

After Lin Chen finished washing Xu Mi's feet and giving her a massage as usual, they washed up and got into bed.

As Xu Mi snuggled into his arms, she suddenly asked, "You haven't finished telling me about what happened at the office today."

"You mean the time the head of the Finance Department personally came to find you and asked you to take someone out?"

Lin Chen nodded. "That's right! You know, honey, the employees in our Finance Department secretly call their director 'Master Miejue'!"

Xu Mi stiffened, then couldn't help but chuckle.

Thinking about it, with Yu Feng's personality, she really was just like Master Miejue!

Lin Chen continued, "She came to find me and gave me quite a start. I thought that Yu Lingyan... wait, that's not right!"

A flash of inspiration struck him. "Yu Lingyan's surname is Yu, and the head of the Finance Department's surname is also Yu. Could they be related?"

Xu Mi's brow furrowed.

Yu Feng had been with her since she founded the company, and for over a decade, she had been unfailingly loyal. Xu Mi felt that even if the whole world betrayed her, Yu Feng never would. That was why she had granted Yu Feng so much authority.

Had she taken this opportunity to arrange for a relative to enter the company?

Ever since Xu Mi fell into depression, she had struggled to keep going to the office, and eventually, as her mood worsened, she stopped going altogether. She was actually unaware of the personnel changes in the company.

Xu Mi came back to her senses. "What did you say?"

Lin Chen hugged her, burying his head in her shoulder and taking a deep breath before saying, "I feel like it's actually quite dangerous for me to be working there; people don't believe I'm married."

"We didn't take wedding photos either. Should we take a selfie with our phones?"

"That way, if anyone asks, I'll have proof!"

Truth be told, if he could, he would have pinned a photo of Xu Mi to the top of his social media profile.

However, since he hadn't cleared things with his mother yet, he really didn't dare. Otherwise, if his mother opened his profile and saw her son being all lovey-dovey with her best friend, her blood pressure would surely skyrocket to 280.

Xu Mi, however, stiffened.

Given Lin Chen's habit of showing off to anyone he met, if they took a photo, within half a day, everyone in the company—including the stray cats in the parking lot—would know she was married to him!

That would be a disaster!

"Honey, what do you think?"

Lin Chen excitedly took out his phone and had already started searching for couple poses.

Xu Mi’s smile was somewhat stiff as she pressed his hand down. "I... I don't really like taking pictures, and I don't like to be in the spotlight. How about we skip it?"

"Huh?"

Lin Chen looked disappointed but didn't force the issue. He changed the subject, "That's fine too. Such a beautiful wife must be kept hidden at home; I wouldn't want anyone else to see her anyway!"

"Then I'll bring our marriage certificate to the office tomorrow. I don't believe they'll doubt me this time!"

Xu Mi's smile grew even stiffer, but she didn't say anything, just nodded vaguely to move past the topic.

They had a good night's sleep.

The next day.

When Lin Chen woke up, he was surprised to find that Xu Mi was already up!

"Honey, why are you up so early today?" Lin Chen asked, puzzled.

Xu Mi walked over slowly and said softly, "I couldn't sleep once I woke up, and the doctor said early to bed and early to rise is good for my health."

"Aunt Zhou has already made breakfast. You should get up too!"

After breakfast, Lin Chen went to look for the marriage certificate.

It was strange, though; he clearly remembered putting it in his suitcase, but now he couldn't find it anywhere.

"That's odd... where is my marriage certificate?!"

Lin Chen was frantic. "It was right here, how could it be gone?"

Xu Mi sat nearby, tilting her head. "Maybe you remembered wrong? You're going to be late for work, just look for it when you get back!"

"I need to take it to show those pests!"

Lin Chen had a sudden thought. "Honey, where is yours? Yours would work just as well."

Xu Mi shook her head. "My marriage certificate is with Mom. It's too late to have her send it over now. Go to work!"

"If they don't believe you, let them. We're married, why care what they say?"

Lin Chen was still reluctant, but seeing the time, he had no choice but to say, "I'll head to work then and look for it when I get back. You behave yourself and wait for me at home, okay?"

As he said this, he leaned his face in.

Xu Mi was startled. "What are you doing?"

"A kiss!"

Lin Chen said as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "That's how it is in the dramas. The husband leaves for work, and the wife gives him a kiss to cheer him on. Didn't you kiss me yesterday?"

Xu Mi balled her fist and gave him a playful punch. "Annoying!"

Despite her words, she blushed and gave him a quick peck on the cheek.

"Is that enough? Hurry up and leave! You're going to be late!"

Lin Chen left the house, feeling thoroughly satisfied.

On the way to the company, as soon as he swiped his card, Lin Chen felt that something was off.

He felt as though the way his colleagues were looking at him today was strange...

Just then, Jiang Yao arrived right on time, and Lin Chen hurried over to him.

"Is there something wrong with me today?"

Could it be that he hadn't rinsed the toothpaste off his face properly?

Jiang Yao scrutinized him seriously and declared, "There is indeed something wrong."

"Where?"

"You look radiant, and you can't seem to stop grinning. What good thing happened?"

"Get lost!"

Lin Chen rolled his eyes. "Seriously, why do I feel like everyone is looking at me strangely?"

Jiang Yao stroked his chin. "Is it just your imagination? But since we were assigned an independent office the moment we joined, it's normal for other employees to be jealous. Why care?"

"Alright, let's get back to the office and get to work!"

Lin Chen thought that made sense, so he didn't dwell on it and followed Jiang Yao into the elevator.

Unexpectedly, just as they reached the office, before they could even go in, a colleague ran over. "Lin Chen, President Shen wants to see you. He said to come to his office as soon as you arrived!"

"Huh?"

Lin Chen was taken aback but nodded quickly. "Alright, I'll go right now."

The colleague lowered his voice, smiling mischievously. "You rascal, you went out with Yu Lingyan from the Finance Department yesterday—what did you do to her?"

"She came to the office today with red eyes, and I'm sure President Shen is looking for you because of that."

He patted Lin Chen on the shoulder. "May the odds be in your favor!"

Lin Chen: "Huh????"
