Volume 1, Chapter 43: If You Don't Like It, I'll Quit

Lin Chen had made up his mind that he would not go back just to take that kind of abuse.

A salary of twelve thousand was certainly high, but it was not high enough for him to sell his dignity.

This, however, spelled misery for Yu Feng.

Ever since she learned that Lin Chen was to be invited back to the company, a knot of stifled anger had been churning in Yu Feng's chest.

To make matters worse, she couldn't get through to him on the phone, and after finally managing to get Jiang Yao to contact him, she waited the entire day only to find out that the man hadn't even shown up?!

To top it all off, she had been chewed out by Jiang Yao and called an idiot for no good reason...

Yu Feng slammed her teacup hard onto the floor.

With a loud crash, the employees outside the office looked at each other in dismay.

"What's wrong with the department manager?"

"Who pissed her off this time!"

"Oh no, the manager is mad. Do you think she's going to make us stay late to work overtime tonight?"

Panic spread among the crowd until their eyes collectively turned toward Yu Lingyan.

Someone tentatively spoke up, "Lingyan, why don't you go in and see what's going on?"

Curious herself, Yu Lingyan walked into the office. "Aunt, what's wrong?"

"You still have the nerve to ask what's wrong?!"

Yu Feng had a bellyful of temper with nowhere to vent, and the moment she saw Yu Lingyan, she lost control.

"Look at you! Your grades weren't much to speak of when you were in school, and after graduation, I spent money and effort to get you into Honey Company, working right under me with a high salary, a comfortable job, and not a single grievance to suffer."

"And what about you? You take a fancy to some young man, and regular contact would have been fine, but you just had to put on those stuck-up princess airs. What, do you think I spoil you so much that everyone in the world has to pander to you just like I do?!"

The mere thought of what the chairman had said made her furious.

She had no idea what kind of background Lin Chen had to actually make the usually mild-tempered chairman lose her temper.

If she didn't know the chairman's personality, she would have even suspected he was some kept toy maintained by the chairman!

Always pampered, Yu Lingyan instantly felt her eyes turn red upon being scolded. "Aunt, you were the one who told me that if I liked a guy in the company, I should bravely pursue him!"

"Is that how you pursue someone?!"

Yu Feng slammed her palm down on the desk. "Besides, the man already said he's married..."

"I don't believe it." Yu Lingyan raised her chin. "What kind of married man doesn't even have a single photo together? He was clearly just trying to brush me off!"

"Well, if he was trying to brush you off, it means he doesn't want to deal with you. Why couldn't you pick someone else? Are all the men in the company dead?"

"I've only got my eyes on him! Besides, I like challenges. So what?"

"You!"

Yu Feng was so angry she nearly vomited blood.

Yu Lingyan's curiosity was piqued again. "What's the big deal? The guy got fired anyway, Aunt, why are you bringing him up again?"

"Why?"

Yu Feng took a deep breath, forcefully suppressing her rage. "That Lin Chen has connections! He was fired in the morning, and by the afternoon, the chairman herself called!"

"Now I'm supposed to find him and bring him back! If I can't find him, I might as well retire early!"

Yu Lingyan gasped sharply. "The chairman?"

A gleam of gossip flickered in the depths of her eyes. "Aunt, if I remember correctly, the chairman is like you and has never married, right? Lin Chen is so handsome—could he be a kept toy the chairman is supporting?"

The more she thought about it, the more convinced she became that her guess was right.

Otherwise, how could a newcomer be assigned a company car and a private office right after joining, not to mention a salary that high?

Looking irritated, Yu Feng retorted, "Impossible! I've worked under the chairman for so many years, and no one understands her better than I do. Anyone else might keep a toy on the side, but she absolutely never would."

If the chairman truly harbored such thoughts, she wouldn't have fallen into depression in the first place.

Yu Lingyan curled her lips. "Fine then! Since the chairman wants him back, why don't you just call him?"

"With benefits as great as ours at Honey Company, all you have to do is wave your hand and he'll come running back like an obedient dog wagging its tail."

The current job market was terrible anyway. If Lin Chen returned to the company, a twelve-thousand salary, an independent office, and a company-provided car would all be his.

She simply refused to believe anyone could resist such temptation!

Yu Feng snorted coldly, "Well, he didn't come back!"

"What?!"

"Anyway, I made the call, but he refused to return, and I'm done dealing with this mess."

Gazing at Yu Lingyan, Yu Feng said coldly, "You started this trouble, so you are responsible for getting him back here. I don't care what method you use, he has to be back at work tomorrow!"

No matter how much she doted on Yu Lingyan, it could never outweigh her own interests.

Yu Lingyan was dumbfounded. "Aunt, you know I offended him..."

"If you offended him, go apologize!"

"I..."

"Say no more, get out!"

Yu Lingyan was chased out of the office.

Facing the gossipy gazes of her colleagues, she snapped irritably, "What are you all looking at? Focus on your own jobs!"

With that, she slammed the door and stormed off.

Marketing Department.

Jiang Yao had spent the entire afternoon hoping for Lin Chen to return.

Instead of waiting for Lin Chen, however, he ended up waiting for Yu Lingyan.

Not recognizing her, Jiang Yao's eyes lit up the moment she walked in.

"Beauty, who are you looking for?"

In all fairness, Yu Lingyan was truly quite attractive—tall with striking facial features, she looked like an absolute beauty at first glance.

Strutting into the room, Yu Lingyan boldly announced, "You're Lin Chen's friend, right?"

Jiang Yao was momentarily stunned before realization dawned on him. "Ah, the little fairy?"

"What little fairy?"

Frowning with impatience, Yu Lingyan demanded, "Where is he? Didn't my aunt tell him to come back to work? Why hasn't he returned after a whole day?"

"Call him and urge him to hurry up!"

Jiang Yao laughed out of sheer exasperation. "Sorry, I'm busy."

Now he fully understood why Lin Chen would rather lose his job than get into a screaming match with someone.

With an attitude as bossy and entitled as this, who could possibly tolerate it?

Annoyed, Yu Lingyan snapped, "It's almost time to get off work. Call him after work! My aunt has already spoken, and yet he still refuses to come back. What's wrong with him? Is having connections so great?"

Jiang Yao curled his lip. "Well, aren't you just something else! After all, your aunt is merely the head of the finance department, yet you're able to throw your weight around and openly harass other colleagues."

"Who could possibly compare to how awesome you are!"

"You!"

Yu Lingyan stamped her foot in anger. "I don't care, you're calling him right now and telling him to come back to work!"

Jiang Yao rolled his eyes. "I refuse. What are you going to do about it?"

"If you've got the guts, have your aunt fire me too!"

He refused to believe that Yu Feng, who had fired Lin Chen in the morning only to frantically try to drag him back by the afternoon, would dare to fire him at a critical time like this!

Sure enough, although Yu Lingyan was bursting with rage, she didn't dare make any more empty threats. She could only grind her teeth and say, "You just wait and see!!!"

Jiang Yao mocked, "Blah, blah, blah."

Fuming with vexation, Yu Lingyan stormed away.

Jiang Yao immediately pulled out his phone and dialed Lin Chen's number.

"Lin Chen, why didn't you come back to the company today? That little fairy came looking for me and told me to call you back to work!"

"You're not actually throwing away such a good job and planning never to come back, are you, buddy?"
