Barbosa and Anna were both frozen with terror and failed to notice it.
Moffett was consumed by rage, thinking only of killing Chu Tian, and he failed to notice it as well.
Even Chu Tian himself had no idea that, at the instant the blade pierced his body, his eyes had turned golden.
“What’s going on?”
Moffett stared in astonishment as he discovered that the longsword in his hand could advance no farther. The air within half a meter of Chu Tian began to warp, and the temperature started to fall. Moffett’s right hand, enveloped by that strange space, seemed to have plunged into the void beyond the heavens, into primordial chaos. His skin began to break down, and the flesh seemed to peel away from his bones…
“Give it back!”
Moffett stood stunned, but Chu Tian was perfectly alert. Though he had no idea what was happening, he would never let such a perfect opportunity slip away. He snatched Dracula’s Wrath from Moffett and struck at him in one sweeping motion.
“Ah!”
Moffett let out a terrible scream. This attack finally had an effect. A long bloody gash appeared across his body, running from shoulder to waist, and black blood gushed forth.
“I’m injured? Hahahaha, I’m actually injured?”
Ignoring his wounds, Moffett began to laugh. “Vladino, I thank you! After a thousand years, I have finally tasted pain once more!”
“Run!”
While Moffett was distracted, Chu Tian called out to his subordinates and immediately turned to flee.
“Trying to leave? Not so fast!”
Moffett reached out and grabbed at Chu Tian.
“Damn you! If I want to leave, what business is it of yours?”
Still running, Chu Tian hurled Dracula’s Wrath at Moffett. At the same time, he kept pulling one object after another from his ring—scrolls, scalpels, wine jars, clothing, staffs…
Anything that might hinder Moffett even slightly was thrown at him.
Boom!
As the final object in the ring flew toward Moffett, a thunderous explosion suddenly resounded through the still night sky.
Accompanying the roar, countless rays of light blossomed above the city. Soft, sacred radiance illuminated Pompeii until it resembled broad daylight.
“Ahhhhh!”
At the center of the radiance, Moffett let out a heart-rending scream.
“Impossible! This is absolutely impossible! This is no fun at all!”
“Boss, save us…”
Under the sweeping light, Barbosa and the dark mages, who had been running wildly only moments before, staggered and collapsed to the ground. They curled up, twitching in agony.
“Praise the Goddess of Life!”
Chu Tian stopped as well. He stared blankly at Moffett, Barbosa, and the dark mages struggling in pain.
What had happened to them? Had they suffered some terrible injury? And why, then, did he feel so wonderfully refreshed? It was as though both his spirit and body had reached their peak.
“Barbosa, what’s wrong with you?”
“Light magic!”
Barbosa could no longer speak. Anna, who stood beside Chu Tian, explained, “Boss, look!”
She pointed toward Moffett, who was half-kneeling on the ground.
The Moffett who had been so arrogant and overbearing only moments ago had now become horribly distorted, scarcely resembling a human being. His delicate skin was cracking apart in patches, and black blood seeped continuously from his body. Yet upon that twisted face hung a strange, inexplicably excited smile.
Chu Tian rubbed his eyes.
There was no mistake. It was a smile.
Moffett was laughing—laughing wildly with delight.
“Hahahaha! This is too interesting! I never imagined that you would turn out to be mine!”
“Boss, has he gone mad?”
Seeing Moffett’s condition, Anna could not help feeling pity for him. Although he had tried to kill them all moments earlier, the elves revered life and could not bear to watch such a lovely little boy suffer so terribly.
“Moffett hasn’t gone mad! He’s happy!”
Chu Tian narrowed his eyes and spoke through clenched teeth.
Damn it, he had suffered a tremendous loss this time!
When he had thrown everything from his ring at Moffett to stop him from giving chase, Chu Tian had been in such a hurry that he had not had time to check what he was throwing.
The scrolls, scalpels, and staff were nothing important. At worst, he could simply do without them.
But he had thrown away the notebook given to him by the Dragon Emperor as well…
Now, that notebook—signed by Alice, the Goddess of Life—was being clutched tightly against Moffett’s chest. Even though it radiated powerful light magic, even though it was corroding Moffett’s body, even though it was consuming his life, Moffett still refused to let go.
“Hahahaha! Vladino, I’ve discovered something even more interesting. I won’t play with you today!”
As he spoke, Moffett’s struggling figure gradually faded. Before Chu Tian’s eyes, he was about to vanish completely.
“Thank you for giving me such a wonderful toy…”
“Leave the book behind!”
Just before Moffett disappeared, Chu Tian charged forward with all his strength. He could not read the book, but after seeing Moffett’s reaction, Young Master Chu was certain that it was something extraordinarily valuable. Otherwise, Moffett would never have clung to it with his life.
And if it was valuable, how could Chu Tian possibly let it go—especially now, when Moffett was half dead?
“Anna! Attack!”
At Chu Tian’s roar, wave after wave of arrows descended upon Moffett. Unfortunately, the arrows were still useless. Though the emerald shafts pierced his body, they could not make him bleed even a single drop.
Damn it! I’ll do it myself!
Chu Tian did not know why he had been able to injure Moffett just now, but if he could hurt him once, he could do it again.
No one noticed that Chu Tian’s eyes were still golden.
He rushed up to Moffett, picked up Dracula’s Wrath, and swung it down.
With a dull thud, Moffett’s hands, still gripping the book, were severed.
“Damn you! How dare you steal my things!”
After cursing him, Chu Tian spat viciously on the ground and snatched up the book.
The moment it entered Chu Tian’s hands, the radiance vanished.
“Ahhh!”
Moffett screamed. In all his life, he had never suffered as much injury in a single day as he had today.
Yet once the book’s light disappeared, his pain lessened considerably.
“Vladino! I’ll kill you!”
Though he had lost both hands, Moffett still had teeth—and legs.
He sprang up. His mouth opened to an absurd extent, far beyond the limits of any human jaw, and two rows of blade-like teeth lunged toward Chu Tian.
Praise the Goddess of Life!
Chu Tian gave a sinister smile.
“Bite me? Hmph!”
He put Dracula’s Wrath away, picked up the severed hands that still clutched the book, and thrust them toward Moffett’s gaping maw.
“Bite yourself!”
It seemed that Moffett’s body had been thoroughly weakened by the light magic. Chu Tian not only stuffed the severed hands into his mouth, but also shoved him backward until he stumbled.
“Urgh!”
Moffett gave a muffled cry. Biting down on his own hands, he rolled and scrambled away from Chu Tian. His figure gradually faded.
“Vladino, I’ll come looking for you again…”
That creature was absolutely not human.
Chu Tian stared in horror as Moffett disappeared with the severed hands between his teeth. His mouth had not moved at all, yet the words had unmistakably come from him.
…
…
“B-Boss, what… what happened?”
Barbosa, who had endured countless storms throughout his life, was terrified now. Cold sweat streamed down his sinister face, making him look utterly helpless.
“Were we dreaming just now?”
“It couldn’t have been a dream!”
The speaker was the half-dragon NMD, who had been unconscious only moments ago. Yet all the wounds on his body had vanished, and his powerful form still hovered proudly in midair.
“Boss, I was definitely on the verge of dying beneath that forbidden spell. The pain felt far too real.”
“But why haven’t any of my arrows disappeared?”
Anna stared blankly at the quiver at her waist, utterly bewildered. She had shot at least a hundred arrows while attacking Moffett just now.
Chu Tian’s subordinates did not understand what had happened, and neither did he. Everything seemed to have returned to its original state—to the instant when Moffett had first slapped him on the shoulder.
The familiar red moon still hung overhead. The same narrow alley remained before them. Everyone stood in precisely the same positions they had occupied while mocking Andor, as though none of them had ever fled from Moffett’s pursuit.
And yet, beside Chu Tian, there was unmistakably one additional person: NMD, who had not been there before.
Barbosa and the dark mages all looked healthy and ruddy-faced. There was no sign that they had ever been injured by light magic.
Their battle with Moffett had been earth-shaking, yet the Imperial Guards—normally so vigilant—seemed not to have heard a thing. Even the commoners living on either side of the alley remained undisturbed. Their homes were dark, their lamps extinguished, and each of them continued sleeping peacefully in their own dreams.
Moffett’s forbidden spell had nearly frozen the entire city of Pompeii. But now, in Chu Tian’s eyes, Pompeii was still the same majestic and prosperous imperial capital. Nothing had changed.
Chu Tian was even still holding the posture of a hearty laugh, as though he had only just finished saying:
“Hahahaha, Barbosa, you… you… your income this month has doubled!”
Time seemed to have suddenly flowed backward, returning to the moment Moffett appeared. Then it resumed its proper course.
But this time, no one came to slap Chu Tian on the shoulder.
After calming his violently pounding heart, Chu Tian narrowed his eyes and smiled.
“Heh heh. We must all have had the same dream just now. All right, it’s over now. Let’s go home!”
Had it truly been a dream?
Chu Tian did not believe it. Where had NMD come from? And why had the book from his ring suddenly reappeared in his hand?
“Boss, your eyes!”
Elven eyesight far surpassed that of ordinary people, and Anna immediately noticed the unusual change. In truth, even without the vision of an elven huntress, anyone could have seen that something was wrong with Chu Tian’s eyes. Under the red moonlight, his golden irises were simply too conspicuous.
There were many races of life on the continent, and their eyes came in countless colors.
But golden eyes belonged only to the Dragon Emperor.
“What’s wrong with my eyes?”
Chu Tian asked in confusion. Before he could receive an answer, dizziness swept through his mind.
Thump!
Young Master Chu collapsed unconscious.
