Chapter Eight: Fierce Debate in Court
The sky was overcast, without the slightest breeze, and oppressively hot.
At ten in the morning, in the city courthouse, the trial for the case involving Old Madam Yang’s accident began.
The presiding judge was a woman in her fifties, with short hair and glasses, her expression stern. She held her head slightly bowed, her eyes occasionally peering over the rim of her spectacles.
Due to Old Madam Yang’s severe illness and frequent comas, her eldest son, Yang Yonggui, represented her as the plaintiff. According to the prepared statement of claim, Yang Yonggui presented the litigation requests and reasons, and, with Wei Ran’s help, submitted the collected evidence: the bloodied towel, Yang’s recorded testimony, photographs from the scene, and more.
When Yang Yonggui finished his statement, the judge signaled for Yin Nian’s side to present their defense. Yin Nian seemed lost in thought.
“Nian Nian, listen to me. I can’t tell you yet—I don’t want things to spiral out of control!” Rong Xiaoyu was anxious, wanting to reveal the truth to Mi Bai at once, but the time wasn’t right. He had nearly spoken out just moments before.
In fact, on the day Noble Consort Xian gave birth, this old minister had his doubts upon seeing the crown prince. The child appeared fully developed, not premature. So, I quietly conducted a blood test, and, as expected, the child’s blood did not mix with His Majesty’s, confirming my suspicions.
Only then did Wei Chunxiao turn around and notice Qingming. Adjusting his glasses and smoothing his hair, he poured a glass of water and reclined on his bed, both of them falling into silence.
With this, the shifty-eyed man grew even more smug, practically floating with delight.
Shen Yuhui stared at Shen Yaoxi in shock. Shen Yaoxi was already a tear-stained mess, looking utterly pitiable.
Lin Li, tormented by guilt for causing someone’s death through her own mistake, was so overwhelmed that she stood there dazed, watching Bai Yan attempt to rescue her with a vacant gaze.
Xiao Tu and Jia Xingxing were already worried that Xiao Le might get into unnecessary conflicts, but hadn’t expected the situation to take such a drastic turn. Their shock turned to helpless laughter.
“I’ll transfer the money right now—it’ll be in your account in less than ten minutes!” At Ouyang Pengcheng’s words, the rest shouted anxiously.
“Seventy—seventy thousand?” Xiao Le couldn’t contain her shock any longer and leapt up in fright.
Xinmin, enraged, rose in silence and paced the floor. Liling smiled quietly, simply watching his upright, well-built figure with gentle eyes.
“What in the world is this? Can’t resist going for the kill, can you?” Old Man Feng was dumbfounded.
She had thought she’d never be called upon by the other party in this life, but unexpectedly, she had already received a task from them earlier.
“Looks like they’ve run into trouble. Let’s go!” Long Ye swept his gaze over and immediately spotted the group just emerging—Chen Changsheng and his companions. At this moment, however, they were crowded onto the busiest floating platform, inevitably sparking a conflict.
Chen Qingdi suddenly looked up, his eyes red and stunned. That shadowy figure gradually slowed, her manner seemingly calm, but when she saw Chen Qingdi’s snowy white hair, emotion surged like a tidal wave.
Otherwise, who knows if he would have continued to endure the pain, waiting for Xiao Jie to squeeze him dry.
She wanted to visit other worlds as well, but they were too lively for her current mood; she preferred to wait for her next mission, which would be a relaxing vacation, leisurely yet still tinged with excitement.
You—you don’t even know who I, Tang Rao, am, where I come from, where I’m going, what I’m doing here, or whether I have powerful experts by my side, and yet you want to provoke me and try to kill me—are you stupid?
“It’s fine if you don’t force an upgrade. I just want to know if there’s any pill that can raise her cultivation?” Long Ye rephrased, since boosting combat strength was, in essence, also raising one’s cultivation.
She had once thought that speaking intimately with Ling Xiu was merely playful teasing, but after that strange dream last night and her increasing reliance on Ling Xiu, she was beginning to realize she had fallen for him. This realization filled her with both fear and guilt, as though she had betrayed the youthful idol she once adored.
