Chapter 144: Interview
Upon hearing these words, the police sergeant, who had just pulled out a cigarette and prepared to light it, abruptly stopped his movements and walked over to the two individuals.
The pair were covered in blood from head to toe, their expensive garments completely ruined, and their faces stained with grime, which was why he hadn't recognized them at first.
But now, stepping closer and taking a hard look, he was instantly startled.
"Aren't these the President of Nanyang Bank and the owner of Elegance Jewelry?"
Recovering from his shock, he immediately reached out and placed his hand under their noses to test for breath.
Fortunately, they were merely unconscious and still alive.
"Quick! Call an ambulance!"
These two men wielded immense local influence, and the livelihood of these police officers depended on this affluent class. Absolutely nothing could happen to them.
One of them was named Eldar, the young and promising President of Nanyang Bank.
The other was named Erosa, the illegitimate son of a jewelry tycoon. After the tycoon's death, his legitimate sons had somehow died one after the other in succession, leaving Erosa to inexplicably inherit the entire fortune.
With the assistance of the police, the two men were swiftly admitted to the hospital.
Following an examination, doctors discovered that they only suffered from external injuries alongside unconsciousness induced by extreme shock, and that they would recover completely after a period of rest.
Several police officers kept watch beside the hospital beds, intending to let these tycoons know who had saved them, in hopes of reaping some rewards.
Consequently, they did not even bother to contact the families of the two men.
However, after a short while, one of the officers seemed to realize something and whispered to the sergeant, "Captain, these two men were found right below the Wesfor family's estate. Could this have something to do with Lord Wesfor...?"
He left his sentence unfinished, but those words caused the sergeant to swallow hard.
Indeed, these two fellows had been found beneath the Wesfor estate, meaning there was a high probability that Wesfor held them in deep disdain.
If he and his men had rescued them, wouldn't that be tantamount to going against Wesfor?
The mere thought of this broke them out in a cold sweat.
Did a few lowly beat cops like them actually think they could fight against Wesfor? In their dreams!
The sergeant said nothing more. He simply stood up from the hospital chair and feigned composure.
"We are still on duty. We cannot afford to waste time here over such matters. Let's return to the precinct immediately."
All the officers nodded, expressing their utmost devotion to duty before following the sergeant away.
Of course, before leaving, they did contact the families of the two tycoons.
Yet no sooner had their backs turned than the media of the Sunset Empire arrived.
Having bribed the hospital nurses to learn the location of the tycoons' ward, they staked out the place en masse, waiting solely for the two men to regain consciousness.
After an entire night, a glimmer of light finally pierced through Eldar's vision.
He forced his eyes open and gazed up at the stark white hospital ceiling.
"Where... am I?"
His throat felt as dry as tinder, rendering his voice exceedingly hoarse.
Yet the moment his voice escaped, a woman flung herself over his body.
"Darling, what happened to you? How did it come to this?" Her voice was laced with sobs, seemingly filled with genuine concern for him.
Before the woman could utter another word, however, she was pulled away by the surging crowd of people.
"Mr. Eldar, could you share with us what you and Mr. Erosa experienced? I am a reporter from the Sunset Empire."
"Mr. Eldar, eyewitnesses claim that you and several local entrepreneurs went to Mr. Wesfor's estate, only to turn up like this afterward. Is that true?"
"Mr. Eldar? Mr. Eldar?"
The barrage of questions caused Eldar's head to throb, yet he managed to capture the crucial piece of information.
Before losing consciousness, he and several capitalists had gone to Wesfor's estate.
*Boom!* His mind felt as though it had exploded, and a torrent of memories rushed back furiously.
He sat upright in bed, his eyes trembling violently, his mouth opening and closing. Even as saliva began to drip from his lips, he remained completely motionless.
The reporters hurriedly captured his reaction on camera, while inwardly feeling bewildered. Why had this tycoon suddenly turned out like this? Had his brain been damaged?
If his brain was indeed impaired, a good show was about to unfold; they had even pre-formulated the news headline:
*"Shocking! Renowned Tycoon Suddenly Becomes an Idiot Overnight: Is This the Distortion of Human Nature or the Collapse of Morality?"*
However, Eldar's next words caused the reporters' eyes to widen in shock.
"Wesfor... Wesfor is a madman... He killed... all of us!"
Perhaps the shadow cast by the name Wesfor was simply too terrifying, for the moment Eldar uttered it, Erosa jolted awake from the fright.
"Wesfor!" Erosa sat bolt upright, startling everyone around him.
They had been laughing at the notion of Wesfor committing murder just a moment ago, only to be given a sudden scare by Erosa's abrupt awakening.
Upon assessing his surroundings, Erosa shifted his gaze directly to Eldar in the neighboring bed.
"You... I..."
He stammered incoherently for a long time, ultimately failing to complete a sentence.
The attention of all the reporters was instantly drawn back to him.
"Mr. Erosa, what on earth are you trying to say? What happened to you?"
Faced with the reporters' inquiries, he slowly turned his head and stared fixedly into the eyes of a female reporter standing right in front of him.
The next second, the unexpected happened.
Erosa lunged forward, grabbed the female reporter by the neck, and forced her to the ground. The veins on his body bulged, making him look utterly maniacal.
"Die! Everyone is going to die!"
However, there were simply too many people around, and he was eventually pulled away by the crowd.
Once restrained and pulled back, Erosa resumed his indiscriminate attacks, demonstrating that he had lost his mind completely.
The hospital security guards quickly subdued the madman.
Following that, everyone's focus returned once more to Eldar.
At this moment, Eldar wore a calm expression, holding a cup of water and sipping from it.
Seeing the reporters turn their attention toward him, he actually smiled.
"As for this matter, I dare to tell it—do you dare to publish it?"
His words served as a rude awakening for everyone present.
Indeed, this affair involved the Wesfor family, whose deterrent power had remained undiminished for a millennium.
They were abundantly certain that whoever dared to write about this would mysteriously vanish alongside their family by the very next day.
Yet the female reporter who had nearly been choked to death moments earlier possessed a stubborn streak, wearing an expression of righteous defiance.
"Why wouldn't we dare to publish it? As long as we reporters do not distort the facts or confuse the public, we dare to publish anything!"
Hearing her words, Eldar set his water cup aside, stared directly at her, and slowly began to speak.
"There were a total of fifteen local tycoons who went to the Wesfor estate with us this time. Aside from myself and him, all of them are dead."
His tone was exceptionally flat, as though the matter had nothing to do with him at all.
"Were they killed by Wesfor, then?" the reporter pressed further.
Many people on the scene had already departed, terrified of losing their lives upon hearing things they ought not to.
Yet the world was never short of daring individuals; instead, they viewed this as a blockbuster scoop capable of netting them a handsome profit.
Hearing the question, Eldar shook his head.
"They were killed by their own stupidity."
"Mr. Eldar, what do you mean by that statement?" The reporter furrowed her brow and asked, uncomprehending.
"Exactly what it sounds like." Eldar's tone remained unhurried.
While he was unconcerned, the reporter grew anxious and asked once more, "Can you recount the detailed sequence of events?"
"The detailed sequence of events?" Eldar laughed. "If you wish to know the details, go investigate the Wesfor estate yourselves. I have nothing more to say!"
With that, without waiting for further questions, he picked up the water cup from the table, smashed it directly against his own head, and passed out.
Realizing there was nothing more to be gleaned, the reporters and cameramen departed in disappointment.
Stepping out of the hospital, a cameraman asked the female reporter, "What do we do now?"
The female reporter fell into deep thought. If they only had this much information, the impact would fall short of her expectations; she needed a far more explosive bombshell!
"When you get back, have someone edit the footage properly. Do you understand what I mean?"
