Chapter 152: I Have Killed Anomalous Entities
"You... you..." Tommy was too shocked to speak.
Jeremy, however, managed to speak: "You really are interesting."
With those words, his gaze dimmed, and his breath ceased.
Tommy's expression shifted from tension to calm. He slowly pulled the knife from Jeremy's body and walked straight away.
Perhaps he had never intended to kill the other man; perhaps he had thought about it once and dismissed it; perhaps the idea had only just been born, or perhaps it had never existed at all.
Sometimes, a person's actions hang on a single thought, requiring no special catalyst. The moment an idea is born, there is a chance the person will act on it.
In the endless darkness, Tommy commanded himself to stay calm countless times, but whenever he thought of what he had done and this intensely oppressive environment, his heart would churn.
His coping mechanism was a continuous self-deception: "I killed him by accident. I killed him by accident."
And when he thought of the foolish spectacle he had made, his sense of guilt seemed to lessen even further.
Yet, what use was it once he had done all this?
He was still like a headless fly, utterly unable to find his own path in this darkness, forced to let fear ravage his soul.
"I..."
Unconsciously, he clasped his chest, his pace growing increasingly hurried.
Now, he somewhat regretted killing Jeremy; after all, if there had been a living person to accompany him, the terror would have been much less.
Amidst his wandering thoughts, another image surfaced: the gruesome, headless corpse beside Jeremy.
Thinking of that headless corpse reminded him of the monster—a terrifying entity capable of cleanly swatting a human head clean off from afar.
The thought that this monster was lurking in the endless darkness, ready to strike at any moment, made him instinctively stop and look around.
Yet, no matter which direction he looked, all he could see was the unknown and the terrifying, as if the monster were waiting for him in that very direction, poised to crush his skull.
He kept his eyes open wide with a sort of helpless effort, as if trying to stretch them wider to see further into the distance, though this was naturally useless.
At that moment, he heard a sound—very faint, yet impossible to miss for Tommy, whose senses were on high alert.
A flash of light crossed his eyes once more, and he looked toward the source of the noise, convinced someone must be there.
A drowning man will desperately grasp at the final shred of hope, even if it is merely a straw, and Tommy was just like a drowning man right now, longing to clutch his own straw.
His expression was unreadable, though certainly not one of joy, as he sprinted toward the source of the sound.
Finally, a little girl came into his field of vision, her back turned to him, seemingly cradling some kind of toy in her arms.
Gazing at the little girl, his brain raced, frantically filtering through useful information until he recalled an article he had casually scrolled past online.
"The luckiest little girl in history is adopted by Wesford."
The article roughly detailed how miserable the little girl's background was and how cruel her parents had been, but the core takeaway was that Wesford had adopted a little Chinese girl.
Looking at the child before him, the image of that mysterious Chinese girl from the article overlapped seamlessly with the figure in front of him.
According to his understanding, Wesford was human, and it was always the doll doing the killing, which meant the Chinese girl adopted by Wesford should also be a normal human being.
Yet, neither the nightmare doll nor the lurking monster had killed this little girl. Truly, she was the luckiest little girl in history.
And with her squatting here unmoving, it was very likely she had simply been terrified out of her wits.
At this thought, he swallowed hard, stepped forward cautiously, and asked, "Are you Wesford's daughter?"
The little girl ignored him, remaining crouched and motionless.
Just as he was growing puzzled, another figure entered his field of vision.
This person was hugging his own arms, trembling all over, wearing the expression of someone who had been utterly traumatized and frightened out of his mind.
The moment this person appeared in Tommy's sight, he looked at him with frantic excitement and grabbed Tommy's arm.
"I... I... You'll never know what I've been through!"
The appearance of this person also brought a wave of relief to Tommy, but before he could speak, the newcomer looked at him in confusion.
"I came over because I heard you talking. I thought there were two people. How come there's only one?"
Hearing this, Tommy first smiled, then pointed toward the little girl and said, "There's a little girl over there. Probably Wesford's adopted daughter. She's been scared stiff."
The newcomer looked in the direction indicated, but his brow furrowed deeply.
"Do you know how terrifying it is here? This is no time for meaningless jokes."
Hearing this, it was Tommy's turn to be baffled, but he quickly assumed the other man simply didn't believe the child was Wesford's adopted daughter, so he said directly, "She really is Wesford's adopted daughter. I just don't know why the doll hasn't killed her."
As he spoke, the little girl slowly stood up and cast a chilling smile in his direction.
That smile made his heart skip a beat. He felt a profound terror emanate from it, leaving him momentarily paralyzed, standing there foolishly.
Seeing Tommy's reaction, the fear in the other man's heart skyrocketed.
"What on earth is over there? Tell me clearly!" What he felt was the terror of the unknown.
In Tommy's eyes, however, the little girl had already stood up and was walking toward them.
The grimness on the child's face and the terrifying aura of the doll in her arms seemed to condense into a physical substance, transforming into a dark mist that filled the air.
He heard the other man speaking, yet he found himself entirely unable to move, incapable of uttering even the tiniest sound.
He did not know whether this was due to sheer terror or some method employed by the doll.
All he felt was the despairing horror of utter powerlessness.
In an instant, the little girl reached the other man's side, and with her arrival, Tommy's gaze followed.
Upon reaching the man, the little girl's arm suddenly swelled to a massive size. Tommy had no doubt that if the man took a single blow from it, his life would instantly be over.
Yet the man continued to shout frantically from the side, "Why aren't you saying anything? What is wrong with you?"
Of course, the man already realized something was terribly wrong, his legs trembling with fright, but compared to the terror of the endless darkness, he had chosen to stay here.
The little girl did not kill the man immediately; instead, she turned a provocative gaze toward Tommy.
At that look, Tommy's pupils contracted sharply, and at that exact moment, the little girl appeared beside him at a speed far beyond his ability to react.
"Big brother, do you believe I can kill him right here?" Her voice was icy cold, as if wafting straight from the depths of hell.
Instantly, Tommy felt his mobility return. His mouth parted slightly, but not a single syllable came out.
Swallowing hard, he forced his head toward the other man and yelled with every ounce of his remaining strength, "Save me!"
Hearing Tommy's cry, coupled with his previous bizarre reactions, the other man concluded with absolute certainty that Tommy must have seen something invisible to him. Otherwise, such a reaction was impossible.
And the unseen threat was undoubtedly that so-called little girl, who was somehow connected to Wesford.
Combined with the horrific orphanage legends he happened to have read about earlier, goosebumps spread all the way down to his toes.
Save him?
Are you kidding me? He was just an ordinary human being; how could he possibly go up against a supernatural entity?
So what could he do now?
In a single word: "Run!"
With that thought, he cast all other concerns to the wind, broke into a sprint, and fled in the opposite direction at top speed.
He was terrified of the endless darkness and loneliness, but he was even more terrified of death.
Seeing him run off, Tommy kept shouting from where he stood, "Don't leave! Let's team up and defeat them! I killed a supernatural entity once before when I was extremely angry, really!"
